FOOTSTEPS IN THE FOG

A gloriously guilty pleasure. "Footsteps in the Fog" wastes no time in getting down to business and the twists and turns of the plot are a constant delight. Stewart Granger, (surprisingly excellent), has just poisoned his wife but maid Lily, (a superb Jean Simmons), has sussed him out and starts blackmailing him and if you think you know where any of this is heading, think again. Before it's over there's another murder and even a trial. This Edwardian melodrama looks great, has a cracker of a script by Dorothy Davenport and Lenore Coffee and a stellar British cast that includes Belinda Lee, Bill Travers, Finlay Currie, Ronald Squire and William Hartnell while director Arthur Lubin shows that with the right material he could certainly deliver the goods; remember he did do the 1943 version of "The Phantom of the Opera". This may be far from a great movie but it is a hugely enjoyable one.
