I have always maintained that Wes Anderson's films are really just New
Yorker cartoons brought to life. "Fantastic Mr Fox"
is just a New Yorker
cartoon in cartoon form and it's fabulous; as a piece of animation it's
even more visually extraordinary than his live action films. It's based
on a Roald Dahl story but the dialogue is pure Anderson, (with a little
help from the equally idiosyncratic Noah Baumbach), and in George
Clooney's Mr Fox it's got one of the great voice-over performances but
then every performance in this picture is perfect, (others include Meryl
Streep and Michael Gambon as well as Anderson regulars Bill Murray,
Jason Schwartzman and Owen Wilson). It's also pitched perfectly at its
audience; kids of all ages and their smart parents will love it. On the
other hand, if Anderson seems a little too sophistical for your tastes
then you will probably find this a little on the precious side whereas
I, as a worshipper of all things Wes, absolutely loved it.
The films reviewed here represent those I have liked or loved over the years. It is not a list of my favourite films but all the films reviewed here are worth seeing and worth seeking out. I know many of you won't agree with me on a lot of these but hopefully you will grant me, and the films that appear here, our place in the sun. Thanks for reading.
